Our daughter Lyndi was killed in the Heidelberg Tavern Massacre, Cape Town, South Africa (Dec 30, 1993) in a reprisal attack by freedom fighters from the Azanian People's Liberation Army (APLA), the Pan African Congress's military wing.
In Oct 2002 I was invited to attend the home-coming ceremony of the APLA commander Letlapa Mphahlele, who had given the order for the massacre. This was held in the village of Seleteng in GaMphahlele (Limpopo Province, South Africa).
It was a moving experience to see the grinding physical poverty of the community, yet find spiritual openness and emotional affirmation by the people for me and for our story of conciliation.
As a result of this experience, Letlapa and I agreed to set up the Lyndi Fourie Foundation to deal with the challenges of poverty and Ex-combatant anger.
